Hypnosis for Excessive Sweating

The medical term for excessive sweating or perspiration is hyperhidrosis.

What is hyperhidrosis?
Perspiration is a normal body function regulated by the Sympathetic Nervous System to maintain constant internal body temperature. There are about five million sweat glands in the body which secrete sweat to cool down the body but for 1% of the population, excessive sweating can be a problem. There are four main areas: hands (palmer hyperhidrosis), armpits (axillary hyperhydrosis), feet (plantar hyperhidrosis) and the face (facial hyperhidrosis). Excessive sweating in any of these areas can be emotionally distressing, causing the person to avoid social contact and affecting many areas of their life.

Surgery for Hyperhidrosis
Endoscopic Thoracoscopic Symathectomy (ETS) is invasive surgery through the chest to stop the signal transmissions of the sympathetic nerve impulse to sweat glands.

Topical medical treatments include astringents that dry up the sweat glands eg Drysol and Drionics, topical antiperspirants which have short periods of efficacy and can cause skin irritation; anticholinergic medications to suppress the cholinergic stimulation of the eccrine sweat glands by the sympathetic nerve trunks to eliminate or reduce excessive sweating; Iontopheresis, an electrical stimulation to the hands to stun the sweat glands in the hands which has not been found to be effective or long-lasting and Botox, found to be painful and of temporary benefit.

Any of these methods only deals with the symptom, not the root cause. So, even IF you do manage to control your symptom in one of these ways, the underlying bottled up emotions causing it will still be present and they will go on to produce another symptom for you, perhaps anxiety, panic attacks or claustrophobia: this is known as symptom substitution. The only way to properly resolve your problem and to make sure you do not develop a different symptom in the future is to resolve the underlying cause of your social anxiety.

Hypnosis Helps Sweaty Palms
Worrying, or being anxious about sweating tends to make the response worse so I work to alleviate the stress and anxiety about the sweating. There are specific neuro-linguistic and hypnotherapeutic techniques that are designed to help facilitate this process quickly and easily.

The less someone is bothered about the idea that they may sweat the less they sweat. Hypnosis is so effective as the technique of ego-strengthening helps enormously in controlling anxiety.

Hypnosis calms your sympathetic nervous system
It is a way to directly access your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and stop excessive sweat and hyperhidrosis.

Sweating is caused by your sympathetic nervous system, which also controls your fight or flight response. If you are suffering from excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis, too many signals are being sent from your sympathetic nervous system to the sweat glands causing unnecessarily high sweat production. Reducing the activity of this part of your nervous system calms you down and can stop excessive sweating.

An important goal of the trance work is to re-condition the sweating response. Appropriate images and metaphors are used, and so are direct suggestions. Focusing on and rehearsing the new response allows it to become established as the 'norm', so that the client can feel drier and more comfortable wherever they are.

An NLP technique I have used successfully is to collapse negative anchors ie triggers which set off the reaction of sweating in certain circumstances then replace them with a positive anchor of feeling calm, confident and relaxed.
