Hypnosis to Overcome Self-Pity

Do you feel sorry for yourself about something that has happened in your life? Do you sometimes feel that, justified though your resentments or regrets may be, they're somehow holding you back?

When bad things happen to you, it's only natural to feel down about it. Life can be very hard, and the toughest of us are still vulnerable to knocks. We may suffer physically, emotionally and mentally. And sometimes there really isn't anything you can do about it.

What happens to you when bad things happen to you

Psychologists recognize that when you experience a setback, there is always a process of grieving to go through. Whatever would have happened if that setback had not been there now won't happen. You've lost that potential future that maybe you were counting on. People don't always recognize that the feelings of self pity they experience in such situations are grief, because most people think of grief as what you feel when someone dies. If nobody died, how can these feelings of resentment, anger, bitterness and regret over bad things that have happened to you be grief? But this is just what they are. The future you would have lived has died.

Grieving and self pity

Grieving is an appropriate response to loss. At the same time, it is important to understand that grieving is a healing process with a purpose. It is not a permanent state of being.

Grieving helps us acknowledge the loss we have suffered, separate ourselves from the future that is not to be, and prepare for a different future that will have its own positive aspects. When we make it through the first two stages, but don't embark on the third, we get swamped in self pity, forever dwelling on what was lost and turning our back on the possibility that life could still be good.

Hypnosis can help you stop self pity and look forward to the future

Stop self pity is a download hypnosis MP3 session devised by psychologists that uses powerful hypnotic techniques to help you make that move into the final stage of letting go of what happened and preparing to take your life in a new, positive direction. As you listen to this session repeatedly, the effects of regularly allowing yourself to enjoy the benefits of deep relaxing trance will begin to permeate your life.

The Power of Your Emotional State

“To be blind is to miss out on so much beauty but most of us waste this valuable gift by only choosing to see negativity.”

We all perceive the world through our senses, primarily the Visual – Auditory – Kinesthetic senses. In NLP we add in Olfactory (smell) and Gustatory (taste) and call these VAKOG. These are our internal representations of which we have one which is more active than the others in terms of how we feel about the world and the language we use. Some people’s primary representation changes according to the situation or their mood. We also refer to a sixth sense we call auditory digital which is self-talk.

Our experience of an event depends on our internal representations, or I/Rs for short. Through our filtering system, we delete, distort and generalize information received based on our attitudes, beliefs, values and experiences. No two people will give exactly the same account of an experience eg a traffic accident.

Alfred Korzybski noted, “The map is not the territory” meaning the map only represents the territory. A map of your country is not your country, only a graphic representation. The mental perception of a memory of an event is only our personal perception, not the event itself.

What we say or hear in our mind, or feel, will affect the behaviour we produce and our physiology. This in turn affects our emotional state. If someone is thinking unhappy thoughts, seeing someone in their mind whom they miss, their shoulders will droop, their mouth muscles will turn down and their whole physiology will become that of a depressed person. The more they hold that stance, the worse they will feel. But put a wide grin on your face, stupid as it may feel, pull your shoulders up and back and it is virtually impossible to feel depressed, regardless of the circumstances. Just a change in physiology has affected the emotional state for the better.

So, to control and direct our behaviours, we must control and direct our emotional state. To control our state, we must consciously direct our internal representations and physiologies.

When I attended a seminar which included the firewalk ie walking on burning coals, my prior belief was that I would not do the firewalk, indeed I could not. No way. Yet at 2am on the first night, I was standing barefoot on a tarmac carpark mentally preparing myself to reach the other side of the challenge to my limiting belief. It was 15 years ago and I do not remember what I did or said to myself but I do remember that I did it and so did another 2,000 people. When we release a limiting belief which does not serve us, we release other chains which have been holding us back. The firewalk is not an end it itself as it provides a new model for belief, allowing new areas to open in our life.
"A domino effect of potentiality."

The internal representations which produce a state that tells us that we cannot achieve are totally different to the new ones we can take on to empower us to produce positive results.

Sometimes we do not know what state we need to produce, what beliefs and attitudes to adopt and here we can model successful people. What do they say? What messages are they taking on board? How they do feel? We identify what is making them successful and then make those traits a part of us.

The kind of behavior people produce is the result of the state they are in. How they specifically respond out of that state is based on their models of the world.
Most people turn on the TV to change their state. Watch a comedy, lose themselves in a drama or incomprehensible to me, choose to watch a dreary programme about people doing negative things, making them feel even worse than before. Or they turn to alcohol, drugs or more positively, exercise. All of these affect our state temporarily.

We can learn techniques which lock in positive states and recall them whenever we need a boost, without resorting to external stimuli or artificial substances. This is the power of NLP.

For more information, I recommend chapter 3 of Unlimited Power by Anthony Robbins entitled "The Power of the State":

Can You Speak As Well As 10 Year old Dalton Sherman?

At 10, Dalton Sherman is a speech-making pro. Since winning a big oratory competition in Dallas, he has spoken at numerous churches and events all over Dallas. He was keynote speaker at an educational conference for 20,000 people on 25 August 2008.

“He has the ‘it’ factor,” said Dawn Blair, Dalton’s godmother. “Like Tiger has it, Obama. You can’t put your finger on it.”

Dalton’s speech was directed toward teachers. The applause motivated him, especially when he gestured and gave shout-outs to different neighborhoods, telling teachers to help children no matter where they’re from. “We need you,” he told them.

He was coached all summer focusing on proper diction and pronunciation of words. Ms. Redmond said she immediately recognized his big vocabulary when she began coaching him and he worked hard in response. Mrs. Sherman uses a worn book of her grandfather’s, “Natural Drills in Expression,” published in 1909, to coach her son on pronunciation.

Demonstrating, she reads a sentence. Dalton repeats it— “to dare, to do, to die.” He loves the book.

“I hope that I touch a lot of people,” Dalton added.

In June, he memorized the words. Then he practiced giving the speech up to three times a week at his family’s church, Concord Missionary Baptist. His mother and Ms. Redmond stood in the balcony as he practiced his movements and the built-in pauses to punctuate the text.

Dalton wants to be a news anchor someday, but he’s got even bigger plans. “Maybe after that, I’ll try to be president,” he says. “I want to be the next Obama.”

If a 10 year old boy can learn how to give a speech in such a way, you can also learn. A local chapter of Toastmasters International can help you develop public speaking techniques sharing feedback of what was good and points for improvement. Learn from others. Overcome your nerves in a safe environment, learning step by step. The Competent Communicator programme of ten speeches will guide you through different challenges while you speak on topics of your choice. Learn to think and speak on your feet with Table Topics – impromptu speeches of up to two minutes. Toastmasters is challenging but also fun and social. 85 years old, there are nearly 250,000 members in more than 12,500 clubs in 106 countries!

Hypnotherapy can help you to overcome nerves, stage fright, blushing, anxiety or excessive sweating.

Is Your Unconscious Preventing Change?

In trance work with hypnosis we talk about the conscious mind and the unconscious mind. Some people associate the word “unconscious” with being in a coma or anaesthetized in an operation. We simply mean that the conscious mind, the content we are aware of, accounts for 5-10% of all brain activity whereas the unconscious mind takes up 90-95%. So most of our brain activity is unconscious, some of it related to normal body functions which we do not consciously control eg pumping blood around the body.

The distinction here is that we might know what we are doing wrong consciously, what we want to change or why phobias are irrational fears but the unconscious mind is keeping us stuck in the habit, the behavior pattern or the trigger response. All long-term change and learning takes place in the unconscious. You only know something when you cannot forget it.

The conscious mind might want to make a change and so those words come out of our mouth but the unconscious could be holding on for a secondary benefit such as attention-seeking, keeping the person on long-term sickness benefit.

Hypnotherapy can be a very fast technique. Typically, smokers stop smoking with hypnosis in one session. Most issues are dealt with in 2-5 sessions, some health problems take longer. But some people are not really ready to change. Without realizing, they argue to stay stuck the way they are and that is simply because they have rehearsed that way of being or doing for a very long time.

I always ask the client whether they are committed to make change NOW and may test with ideomotor signaling or quantum linguistics, questions which make no sense to the conscious mind but fire up the neurology in the unconscious. In relevant cases, a detailed personal history can already lead the person to identify patterns and make changes.

Milton Erickson said, “Your clients will be your clients because they are out of rapport with their unconscious mind.”

If the client cancels their second appointment, I don’t take it personally. I just realize they are not ready to make change even though they say they are. This lack of personal congruence may be due to beliefs, value systems, identity issues which is where NLP comes in.

I believe,
1. “People have within them all the resources they need to achieve what they want.” Yes, but they don’t know it.
2. “People make the best choices they can at any given moment, given their present model of their world.” Exactly, it is their model or view of the world which needs to be altered before they can achieve the outcome they want and we must always respect another’s model of the world, even crazy sounding ones!

The client must agree to enter into a relationship with me. Just because they have come for help does not mean that they are ready to change. My job is to do the initial work with their unconscious so that they can move forward and make positive change.

Hypnosis for Excessive Sweating

The medical term for excessive sweating or perspiration is hyperhidrosis.

What is hyperhidrosis?
Perspiration is a normal body function regulated by the Sympathetic Nervous System to maintain constant internal body temperature. There are about five million sweat glands in the body which secrete sweat to cool down the body but for 1% of the population, excessive sweating can be a problem. There are four main areas: hands (palmer hyperhidrosis), armpits (axillary hyperhydrosis), feet (plantar hyperhidrosis) and the face (facial hyperhidrosis). Excessive sweating in any of these areas can be emotionally distressing, causing the person to avoid social contact and affecting many areas of their life.

Surgery for Hyperhidrosis
Endoscopic Thoracoscopic Symathectomy (ETS) is invasive surgery through the chest to stop the signal transmissions of the sympathetic nerve impulse to sweat glands.

Topical medical treatments include astringents that dry up the sweat glands eg Drysol and Drionics, topical antiperspirants which have short periods of efficacy and can cause skin irritation; anticholinergic medications to suppress the cholinergic stimulation of the eccrine sweat glands by the sympathetic nerve trunks to eliminate or reduce excessive sweating; Iontopheresis, an electrical stimulation to the hands to stun the sweat glands in the hands which has not been found to be effective or long-lasting and Botox, found to be painful and of temporary benefit.

Any of these methods only deals with the symptom, not the root cause. So, even IF you do manage to control your symptom in one of these ways, the underlying bottled up emotions causing it will still be present and they will go on to produce another symptom for you, perhaps anxiety, panic attacks or claustrophobia: this is known as symptom substitution. The only way to properly resolve your problem and to make sure you do not develop a different symptom in the future is to resolve the underlying cause of your social anxiety.

Hypnosis Helps Sweaty Palms
Worrying, or being anxious about sweating tends to make the response worse so I work to alleviate the stress and anxiety about the sweating. There are specific neuro-linguistic and hypnotherapeutic techniques that are designed to help facilitate this process quickly and easily.

The less someone is bothered about the idea that they may sweat the less they sweat. Hypnosis is so effective as the technique of ego-strengthening helps enormously in controlling anxiety.

Hypnosis calms your sympathetic nervous system
It is a way to directly access your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and stop excessive sweat and hyperhidrosis.

Sweating is caused by your sympathetic nervous system, which also controls your fight or flight response. If you are suffering from excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis, too many signals are being sent from your sympathetic nervous system to the sweat glands causing unnecessarily high sweat production. Reducing the activity of this part of your nervous system calms you down and can stop excessive sweating.

An important goal of the trance work is to re-condition the sweating response. Appropriate images and metaphors are used, and so are direct suggestions. Focusing on and rehearsing the new response allows it to become established as the 'norm', so that the client can feel drier and more comfortable wherever they are.

An NLP technique I have used successfully is to collapse negative anchors ie triggers which set off the reaction of sweating in certain circumstances then replace them with a positive anchor of feeling calm, confident and relaxed.

Private therapy with a competent hypnotherapist is always the best route but a download hypnosis Mp3 for excessive sweating is available
plus a script for treating excessive sweating by professional hypnotherapists.

Hypnosis for Sexual Confidence

As a hypnotherapist offering psycho-sexual therapy to individuals and couples, I know how many people suffer from a lack of sexual confidence. Just as in many areas of life, sexual confidence is important.

Sexual confidence produces an attraction to others. People enjoy sex with those that are relaxed, confident and secure in their love making abilities. Just imagine how good it feels if you know you have the sexual confidence to always satisfy your partner and take them to sexual heaven.

How good it would feel to be totally confident in your sexual abilities and sexual prowess. Feeling good about your sex life and performance is so important when it comes to leading and living a confident, take charge, lifestyle.

Sexual confidence For Men - Help overcome your sexual fears and conflicts, impotence, premature ejaculation, inadequacy and even size envy. Get that confidence back, build back that sex drive and experience what it's really like to let go and enjoy what you've been missing!

Sexual confidence For Women - Open up to true passion, love and sex. Increase your pleasure and reconnect with that relationship. Explore yourself fully like never before and release any, and I mean any, sexual dysfunction. Bring power back into the bedroom!

Treating any form of sexual problem with hypnosis means you can seek help on your own and keep your clothes on. Through deep physical and mental relaxation, hypnotherapy can be used to heighten your sensual involvement and help you to be fully present while engaging in sex.

Since the process deals with your mind, all sexual activity during hypnotherapy takes place only in your imagination. What you learn through hypnotherapy is practiced privately in your own space.

A common, effective use of hypnotherapy is to lower your anxiety.

The anticipation of failure (particularly for men anxious about their ability to have or to maintain an erection) brings on anxious feelings. These in turn bring about the failure. Hypnotherapy ends this vicious circle and replaces the anticipation of failure with the certainty of success and confidence!

You can seek help through a qualified hypnotherapist or use this download hypnosis Mp3 for immediate benefit.

Leona Lewis Turns to Hypnosis to Boost Self-Confidence

Leona Lewis, winner of X-factor, is using hypnotherapy to banish her stage nerves before going on a 14-months tour. Simon Cowell arranged the therapy with Paul McKenna.

A source said: “Seeing as Leona is on the path to becoming a global touring powerhouse, no corners will be cut. She already has bags more poise and confidence than she used to but she’s a natural born worrier. Bosses at Syco (Cowell's music management company) want to make sure her performance is as perfect and polished as an artist who has been around for years.”

Many celebrities have successfully worked with hypnotherapists. Recently former Spice Girl, Mel B, used hypnosis to calm her nerves before doing her Las Vegas burlesque show and Eva Mendes overcame her fear of spiders through hypnotherapy so Leona is in very good company.

Source: Breaking News 27 July 2009

I treated a lady opera singer for stage fright or stage nerves. Many of her contemporaries used beta blockers to calm their nerves but she wanted to take control naturally so I taught her self-hypnosis as well as boosting her self-confidence.

Hypnosis can also help people with one of life's greatest fears: public speaking, along with all the associated problems like blushing, sweaty hands, excessive sweating, nervous twitches, nail biting, even stress incontinence.

By working direct with the unconscious mind, hypnosis works to strengthen the ego and create a new reality as this part of the mind knows no difference between reality and imagined. Reprogramming works quickly and effectively. Anyone above the age of seven with an IQ over 70 can successfully be helped by hypnosis.

Antonia Harrison is the English Hypnotherapist in Belgium and recommends Download Hypnosis Mp3s for immediate access to positive life-changing hypnosis sessions.

Better Self-Confidence Through Hypnosis

Do you find presentations, meetings or social events stressful and a test of your self confidence?

Do nerves make you self conscious, stumble over words or perform below par?

Hypnosis can help you in a naturally, relaxed way to overcome this problem permanently.

Hypnosis works direct on the unconscious mind which accounts for 90-95% of brain activity. This part of the mind knows no difference between what is real and what is imagined. It is therefore possible to feed it new programming of how we want life to be, the sort of person we wish to be with the character traits or self-image that we require. The unconscious mind then turns this into reality.

"What the mind can conceive, the mind can achieve".

The basis of most reprogramming in hypnotherapy is ego-strengthening which boosts confidence. Clients who come for various reasons are amazed at how quickly they feel calmer and more confident, regardless of the main reason for seeking therapy.

You will be familiar with Coué "Everyday in every way I'm getting better and better". It is similar. Post-hypnotic suggestions say that the person will feel this improvement every day, not just short-lived.

A boost in self-confidence can bring benefit in many situations:

* leading meetings
* public speaking (one of life's greatest fears for many people!)
* giving presentations
* cold calling or prospecting for business
* teaching
* dealing with the public in any way
* improved social skills
* social and business networking
* dating
* parenting, especially discipline and providing a good role model
* teenagers and young people going out into a scary world
* bridegroom or best man's speech
* overcome blushing
* overcome sweaty hands or excessive sweating
* overcome shyness
* improved sports performance
* stage fright

Hypnosis works by developing the right side of the brain during an alert or heightened state of awareness of that part of your brain. It temporarily reduces the interference from the logical, calculating left side of the brain so that the creative right side of the brain can create a new reality.

This new-found confidence can lead to job promotions, a new love and so many rewards, financial or otherwise.

Hypnotherapy Can Help Adolescents Cope

Too many young people lack the self-esteem needed to make a positive start in the adult world. Young people withdraw into their own world of adolescence dominated by friends, music and often sexual promiscuity and drugs. Parents and teachers demand respect but fail to reciprocate in a way that young people appreciate. Adults give one verbal message but act in a contradictory way. It is often a case of “Do as I say not as I do” yet we wonder why the adolescents are confused and rebel.

Physical and hormonal changes are taking place in their body sometimes causing embarrassment such as acne, sudden breast growth, voice change and through all this sudden change, they are seeking their identity. No longer a child but not yet an adult. Who are they?

We can deal with them not as unformed, uncertain adolescents but as individuals of unlimited potential, people with greatness within them. Respect their gifts and individuality and they will come to respect themselves.

Bombarded with academic information, they wonder what relevance this has in the real world. Subjects can be boring or stimulating depending on the teacher’s skills and ability to connect with the students in their model of the world. In a world of social media such as Facebook, My Space and Twitter, SMS’s, internet surfing, TV zapping, they connect with the world of NOW so why study Latin or Literature? Often they are unable to write complete sentences as they are used to the SMS language of abbreviations. Why write when you can type? Then there are seemingly non-stop exams and all that stress. For what purpose? To graduate from university with a large debt and difficulty in finding employment? Or minimal job prospects from inadequate training?

Yes, adolescence is a difficult time especially if we force our young people to conform and fit in with our world. Instead of alienating them and losing vital contact during a period when our influence can still be beneficial, we can help them quickly through personalized hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy is a safe, natural form of therapy which works direct with the unconscious mind, or subconscious, where all change and learning takes place with the least resistance. Primarily known as a way of stopping smoking in one session, a competent hypnotherapist can help young people in many ways eg:

- Improving self-esteem
- Improving confidence
- Improving self-respect
- Dealing with addictions eg drugs, cannabis, even excessive online surfing
- Nail-biting, thumb-sucking, hair pulling or blushing
- Self-harm eg cutting
- Eating disorders
- Weight control
- Nervous twitches, stuttering
- Acne, eczema, warts
- Excessive sweating
- Exam nerves
- Concentration & motivation
- Stress
- “School-itis” ie aversion to school
- Learning languages
- Improved memory
- Dating confidence
- Fears/phobias
- Obsessive & compulsive thoughts
- Depression
- Coping with divorce, new families & sexual abuse
- Shyness
- Public speaking & leadership
- Driving test nerves
- Certain health problems, pain control
- Coping with cancer & chemotherapy
- Dyslexia
- Sports improvement

All of these problems have been successfully solved or helped by hypnotherapy all over the world, often in a couple or a few sessions.

Neuro Linguistic Programming employs language to re-programme the mind aimed at finding solutions and empowered resourceful states.

Life coaching can help for a specific project, time period or ongoing challenge.

©Antonia Harrison 2009, the English Hypnotherapist in Belgium offering personalized hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming in Limburg, Brussels and Antwerp. Life coaching is also conducted over the telephone worldwide. She is available for presentations to groups and private or corporate training.

Hypnotherapy -- What You Can Expect

People are always asking me to explain hypnotherapy and I find they have totally the wrong idea, possibly from films. This article by Judith Pearson explains exactly what hypnotherapy is and isn't. We both work in a similar way using various forms of hypnosis plus I am also a Master Practitioner of NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programming. After over 20 years as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Hypnotherapist, and Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, I continue to find that clients come to me with misperceptions and unfounded expectations about hypnotherapy. The purpose of this paper is to clear up some of those misperceptions, so that you know what to expect in working with me or any other hypnotherapist.

First, some clients expect they can just walk into my office for the very first time, sit down, be instantly hypnotized, and walk out 60 minutes later a changed person. I wish that were the case, but it isn't. Like most therapists and medical specialists, I want to interview you to learn about your issues and concerns and about your personality. I will ask you these questions in order to develop a plan that I think will best serve you.

Second, some clients have a very antiquated and narrow definition of hypnotherapy. They think I am going to wave a watch before their eyes and I'll say, "Go into a deep sleep," and they will instantly lose consciousness. I think this attitude is due to the influence of too many Hollywood movies. I am a solution-oriented therapist and counselor. That means that I use several methods to help clients get the results they want. I draw upon traditional hypnosis, guided imagery, visualization, metaphor, Ericksonian hypnotherapy, eye-movement therapies, client-centered methods, cognitive psychology, reframing and Neuro-Linguistic Programming to meet my clients' needs.

There are many approaches to hypnotherapy. Some are structured and direct, while some are more creative and indirect. I select the methods from my repertoire that I think will best work for you. However, it is a trial and error process. If one method doesn't work with you, perhaps another will, or you might benefit from a combination of methods. Hypnosis is a learning process and clients sometimes have unconscious concerns they need to work through, or they may need to hear the message more than once, in various presentations. For this reason, I cannot always predict with accuracy the number of sessions that will be optimum for your needs.

Third, many clients expect trance to be some magical, mysterious state in which they will experience strange sights, sounds, and sensations, like being on some mind-altering, hallucinogenic drug. Or they might expect to have no memory for the experience at all because they equate trance with being unconscious. Let me explain that trance is not an all-or-nothing experience. Trance is just part of the continuum between alertness and sleep. Therefore, trance is a naturally-occurring state, and people access trance every day.

With hypnotherapy, the depth of trance can vary. Some people reach a light trance, and some are very adept at easily accessing a deep level of trance.

Here are some basic descriptions of trance levels:

Light Trance: This is a state of curiosity and concentration, like daydreaming. I may ask you to close your eyes and visualize or remember something. You don't have to close your eyes if you don't want to. You remain aware of your surroundings. You can carry on a conversation. You still have complete control over your actions. You can hear every word and remember what happened during the session. You won't feel weird or spacey or zoned out.

Medium Trance: You will feel more relaxed with a deeper concentration. Questions or new ways of thinking about things may enter your mind, because it's easier for you to make new associations, imagine, entertain new possibilities, and obtain insight. You still remain aware of your surroundings, although you may lose track of time. You may or may not notice that you feel more compliant and suggestible. You won't feel weird or spacey or zoned out.

Deep Trance: At this stage, your mind is so free of distractions that you can ignore anything not relevant. You can have spontaneous amnesia, and not remember what happened, and rationalize later that you were asleep. Suggestibility is highest at this stage, in which the conscious mind is resting (not participating) and the subconscious mind is most active. You might enter that twilight stage between waking and sleeping known as the "hypnogog." Beyond this state, you will fall asleep.

Any stage of trance might be appropriate for the issues you want to address with hypnotherapy. Most clients experience light and medium trance during their first few sessions of hypnotherapy. Although a minority of hypnotherapists say that clients can achieve results only with deep trance, this view is not widely accepted and is easily dismissed. Many people get results from hypnotherapy and were not even sure whether they were hypnotized because they felt so "normal" during the process.

Fourth, while some clients worry as to whether they are hypnotizable, many hope and expect that they will achieve deep trance instantly and easily. I too wish that were the case. It would make my job much easier. Most people can be hypnotized, if they want to be hypnotized. However, not everyone will easily reach deep trance. Some clients exhibit a natural capacity for trance work, and they readily reach deep trance. On the other, hand there are many people who simply cannot reach deep trance, or who can do it only after hours of practice.

One of the aims of hypnosis is to help you work more closely with your own subconscious mind--the source of your inner wisdom. It is my philosophy that everyone creates their own experience of trance, and that your subconscious mind will take you to the level of trance that adequately solves your problem. I will do my best to help you do just that.

Finally, some of my clients expect that I will take control over their thinking and actions, and after hypnosis, they will behave as an automaton--achieving results without any conscious effort. The purpose of hypnosis is not to take away your control--its purpose is to give you back control, so that you can have the results you say you want. The purpose of hypnosis is not to stop you from thinking, but to enhance your ability to think in productive, healthy ways, so you can make a decision about what you want to accomplish and carry it out faithfully.

My job as your hypnotherapist is to convince you of the truth that I believe about you, but you haven't yet begun to believe about yourself: You already have within you all the internal resources (strength, power, motivation, determination, creativity, intuition, insight, intelligence) you need to solve your problem and get the results you want. All hypnosis does is help you find and tap into those resources that have been there all the time.

Can Hypnosis Help in Learning a Foreign Language?

The answer is yes.

Hypnosis works on the unconscious mind through deep physical and mental relaxation. In this trance state, the mind enters an Alpha-Theta brain wave level making it more receptive to new information where learning becomes accelerated and easy.

Young children easily learn a new language by copying, rather than slaving through verb tables and grammar. We have all seen how young children live in a more or less permanent state of daydream and fantasy, often totally engrossed in whatever they are doing although still consciously “present”. In this state, they are able to soak up new languages, even two or three at the same time. By being less concerned with grammar and spelling rules, children learn to speak a new language within a matter of months. New neural pathways are quickly made at a young age making language learning effortless. I personally started learning French at age four and speak without accent. I fail to understand why language learning starts at age 10-12 in so many countries

Likewise under hypnosis, an adult can absorb a new language easily and effortlessly when the relaxed state is anchored to learning.

As an adult, one can only learn a foreign language by study and some form of structure. Hypnosis assists the study by leading the person into a state of highly focused attention which is a good definition of hypnosis itself. By utilizing the "learning trance state" we can place ourselves in the optimum state for receiving information and so maximise our chances of picking up new knowledge. Words and phrases come back to you without having to think and you learn without realizing you are learning.

The theory behind how hypnosis helps someone to learn a foreign language is also the same approach which helps people to pass exams, improve memory and concentration without anxiety. By bypassing the critical conscious mind, hypnosis works with the unconscious mind where all change and learning takes place.

Hypnopaedia is learning during sleep
When I lived in Southern Spain, a language school offered a course in Spanish under hypnosis, the idea being that someone would absorb the language easily and without distraction in this deep relaxation state where the unconscious is more receptive to new information and suggestion. Apparently, the method was successful. Studies on sleep learning do indicate a significant increase in recall of target words.

• Listening to a loop of words or phrases in your target language will significantly improve your pronunciation, whether asleep or awake. In order to be able to repeat sounds in a foreign language, you need to hear these sounds over and over again.
• Listening to a loop of sounds might disturb your sleep if you listen at night so listening during a nap is the ideal, as it is not critical sleep and you achieve the same if not better results.
• Sleep learning does help, but as a supplement to active learning, ie testing, retesting and drilling.
• Study words 20 minutes before you fall asleep and for 10 minutes when you wake up review the list. Memory solidification occurs during sleep.
• As you are drifting to sleep in your mind review the words you learned that day.

While personalized therapy with a qualified hypnotherapist is always the best route to follow, if this is not practical, a download hypnosis mp3 to aid language learning through hypnosis is available as well as a professional hypnotherapy script for language learning to use as a basis for personalized therapy.

This paper reports an experiment which was designed to determine whether foreign language pronunciation could be improved through hypnosis. Twenty subjects were first given the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotizability to familiarize them with the state of hypnosis. In the second session each subject was individually tested on his/her ability to pronounce Thai words under three conditions: Baseline, Hypnosis, and Post-Hypnosis. For each experimental condition the subjects heard and repeated the stimulus items on one of three lists of 15 Thai words. The subjects' responses were later evaluated by a native Thai linguist. The results indicate that deeply hypnotized subjects (as defined by self-reported depth) performed significantly better than less well hypnotized subjects.

Brain Power Control System

What is self improvement? Well, the dictionary defines self improvement as "improvement of one's mind, character, etc. through one's own efforts". Seems pretty simple and straight forward.

So logically, the next question one would ask themselves is what should the efforts consist of? In other words, what techniques, principles & resources work most effectively?

Well, that is a question that Clinical Hypnotherapist, Steve G. Jones has been asking himself for many years. Since the 1980's, Steve has been changing the lives of people all over the world for the better using the power of hypnosis.

One thing that he has always kept in mind in his search is that there is no "one magical formula" that can completely improve every single aspect of your life. Enhancing your level of self improvement is a process that consists of many different techniques and formulas. After all, one's self consists of many things and
because we are all different, some of us need more improvement in certain places than others.

Taking the necessary steps toward enhancing your self improvement is like exercising. Only instead of training your body, you're training your mind.

When you exercise or train your body, there is no one universal program known to man that works for everyone. Rather, effective programs consist of a combination of many different techniques and exercises that come together at different points that create the desired result.

For example, let's say your goal is to build muscle. Because your entire body consists of different muscles that do different things, different exercises are required for each one. And for each muscle, there's probably 5-7 different exercises that you can perform to achieve your overall fitness goal.

Training your mind is no different. The techniques that you apply should always vary. The important thing is that they actually work.

Many people however, don't take the process of training their brain as seriously as they should. They spend all of their time, money and energy on resources that they think will improve their lives without ever actually investing in their mind.

Think of your mind as the root and everything else as the branches. The roots set the stage of success for everything else. If you invest in your mind, everything else will fall into place.

And that's why Steve G. Jones, M.Ed. is proud to present his newest creation. Introducing the all new Brain Power Control System...

Consisting of Four Empowering Hypnosis Modules, this program will reveal secrets like:

Essential Brain Nutrition - While certain foods strengthen your brain, others weaken it. Here you'll learn which foods to avoid and which ones to make part of your daily regimen.

The Secret Element Needed For A Healthy Brain - Without this element, your brain is sure to burn out.

Three Simple Ways To Strengthen Your Brain Using Physical Fitness - These 3 simple steps will ensure your brain gets healthy doing everyday, easy exercises.

Seven Powerful Brain Techniques To Give Your Brain A Workout - Aside from the physical exercise, you need mental exercise or your brain will get out of shape. Here he discloses the most effective mental exercises known to man.

Five Simple Steps To Keep Your Brain Healthy - As all true successes can only be measured by results that last, you will discover the exact methods to sustain success.

And Much more...

Have a look at the all new Brain Power Control System.

Stop Smoking in One Session of Hypnosis

SMOKING is the main reason people ask for hypnosis. It is the best way to stop smoking. Far more successful than Nicorette chewing gum, nicotine patches, acupuncture, cold turkey and sheer willpower. From the moment you book the session, you become an ex-smoker.

“Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit.”
-New Scientist, 10/92

There are many reasons to stop: bad for your health, expensive waste of money, no smoking rules at work or in bars/restaurants, planes etc., anti-social habit, passive smoke inhaled by family members especially children, smelly clothes and hair, ageing effect on your skin etc. I just ask one thing - that you want to stop for your own reason(s), not that someone else is pressuring you to quit.

So many conditioned thoughts can lead you to believe it is difficult to stop smoking:
“Quitting is so hard.” “I can’t stop thinking about cigarettes.” “I’ll put on weight if I stop”. (A common misconception.) “I need to smoke to relieve stress.” “I always smoke after a meal (or sex).”

With my help, you will stop smoking by relaxing and changing your thoughts about smoking. I do not use "aversion therapy" which makes you feel sick whenever you smell cigarette smoke but just reprogramme your mind to see you as a non-smoker. You will enjoy the freedom from slavery to smoking.

Some people even need therapy to break their addiction to Nicorette chewing gum or nicotine patches so don't take the risk - choose the natural, relaxing way to become a non-smoker.

I am the leading English Hypnotherapist in Belgium and have a high success rate with smokers who stop in one session of hypnosis.

One 60 - 90 minutes session, using techniques which have been shown to produce a 95% success rate.

I offer private sessions in Brussels (Avenue Louise) or Antwerpen (Berchem) or I can see people at my home in Limburg.

I also sometimes run a special group session in Brussels (Avenue Louise) or Antwerpen (Berchem)

The next group sessions:
TBA (Brussels) 3 July(Antwerpen - in Dutch)

A group session is a great idea for a club, school, charity or other organization which wants to raise money and encourage people to stop smoking and so look after their health at the same time.

Hypnotherapy and NLP in Anger Management

We all “lose it” at times but uncontrolled anger can be aggressive, causing violence, destructive behavior and affect our relationships.

Anger is a primary, negative emotion, one of the base emotions which we probably all feel at some point in our lives. Sometimes it is an understandable response to an event whilst at other times it is an exaggerated response, totally out of proportion to the cause. Any form of behavior, good or bad, is learned from others during our formative years, particularly the imprint period from 0-7 years. All of our values, beliefs and behaviours are learned during this important time, hence the Jesuit saying, “Give me a seven year old boy and I will show you the man”.

In a state of anger, the person may be impatient, aggressive and hostile. It is always a self-centred behavior displayed without thought of the impact on others. It may be verbal, physical or both. Anger as a behavior can be deeply buried causing the person to feel self-hate and depression, even suicidal if they feel that they are a bad person, a negative part of society.

Physically, the body reacts in anger with an increased respiratory rate, pulse rate and sends blood to the muscles that cause the bones to move, hence the sometimes involuntary assaults. It constricts the pupils of the eyes and pumps hormones from the adrenal gland, causing stress rashes, high blood pressure and other stress induced disorders. The person may be a typical "Type A" aggressive personality.
The best way to manage anger is to recognize and deal with it in a positive way, starting with taking responsibility for the negative behavior, negotiating, taking time out, hitting a punch bag or pillow if necessary. That is much better than shouting at the kids, kicking the cat or taking a swipe at your wife. Alcohol may seem to help by numbing reaction but that is only masking the problem and continued use for coping will just lead to an alcohol dependency problem, making the anger and aggression far worse.

The angry person may believe that their behavior is justified and appropriate. Everyone else is at fault. They will relive the moment over and over, telling you with drama why the other party victimized them, went out of their way to make life difficult. Such beliefs can lead to paranoia that others are deliberately “out to get them”.

Different therapies have different approaches including recognizing how anger is used as an ego defence mechanism, one of several identified by Freud; finding ways to avoid people and situations which are making the person angry; develop communication skills or find and correct distorted ideas about life and others.

Hypnotherapy and NLP can help someone suffering needing anger management

Firstly, the person must be aware of the distinction between cause and effect. Is he the cause of the problem or the receiver and therefore the effect? Is he the aggressor or the victim? Can he react in a different way so that the aggressor’s hostile behavior is diffused, leaving no call for an angry reaction?

If the root of the anger is someone else’s behavior in the past, particularly neglect, mis-treatment, abuse, violence or sexual abuse, can the person find forgiveness? Oprah Winfrey reported that she was molested by her cousin, her uncle and a family friend, starting when she was nine years old. Such a history could have caused her to display a victim personality, blaming her past for her failure. Instead Oprah’s positive role models in her life encouraged her to take a different path and she is now the “effect” in millions of people’s lives around the world. Healing through forgiveness, even prayer, may take time but will be life-changing.

So for some people seeking anger management, finding forgiveness may be necessary.

For others, regression under hypnosis to find the root cause may help to release negative emotion. It may be a traumatic event which is consciously remembered or not or it could be living in a family where anger was frequently displayed, whether against the child or not. Children learn by example so may have modelled inappropriate behaviour.

The person may feel there is something they cannot communicate which is causing frustration. This frustration may have been building for years. Use of the Gestalt “Empty Chair” method involves imagining a third party sitting on a chair and telling them what has been pent up for years. This can be done under hypnotic trance, in an associated or disassociated way, to release years of frustration. Direct suggestion under hypnosis of reacting to trigger situations in a more appropriate, non-aggressive way can help. A professional script for hypnotherapists treating anger is available.

NLP can be applied using parts therapy, asking one part of the person to help the other part of the person to react in a more appropriate way. Or changing the behaviour using the Swish technique.

Ericksonian Hypnosis would offer indirect suggestions and tell appropriate metaphors such as the one on page 85 of Hypnotherapy Scripts: A Neo-Ericksonian Approach to Persuasive Healing about a car which has been damaged.

There are different approaches to treating anger which do not have to be traumatic, bringing the old negative feelings to the fore. Everyone is different, of course, so requires different personalized approaches. However, inappropriate anger can be released and make a huge difference to your daily behaviour. It is certainly worthwhile finding a competent hypnotherapist to help you with the healing.

A general download hypnosis mp3 for anger management is available.

The Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis System

I love to help people use the power of hypnosis in both everyday life and therapeutically.

As a professional hypnotherapist, I am always interested to learn new techniques and ideas from fellow professionals around the world. I visit their sites, read their blogs and look at the products they are offering people to use at home.

One subject that fascinates people is conversational, everyday hypnosis.

That's why Steve G Jones has developed an amazing 18 module system to give you almost-absolute control in everyday situations.

Imagine if you could induce hypnosis in anyone while speaking to them... and it's not a rocket science.

However there are two limiting factors.

You can hypnotize one individual at a time (so forget about creating a big harem of hot, hypnotized women calling you responding to your TV ad). :)

An individual must have an IQ of at least 90. In other words, the person is not extremely stupid (so forget hypnotizing your dog).

Other than that you must know:

"With great power comes great responsibility" - Spiderman's uncle

This system will show you how to master everyday hypnosis... and there is even word-by-word scripts to make sure there is no misunderstanding.

Under one condition...

That you promise to use it ethically. As hypnosis of that degree in unethical hands could mean a disaster and Steve does not want to be held responsible for such thing.

It is like a weapon. So Steve is carefully selecting who can have access. Check out the website to see if you qualify.

==> Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis System

In this Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis System you'll discover...

** How to use one little-known routine to make an outstanding, charming first impression.

** How to close almost any deal for as long as there is even a slightest interest in your offer (and quick-test to find that out on Module 6).

** How to calm down aggressive people and demand their attention. On Module 8.

** How to induce amnesia - Extremely powerful one - Module 9.

Or the nice-one, clients specially like...

** How to start a conversation even with a total stranger and have a great rapport from the very beginning

Best of all, you can discover these and dozens of other proven and powerful hypnosis techniques for very little money.

So, if you want to get an edge in everyday communication, lead other people towards your goals and you promise to do it ethically... I urge you to find out more about
my "Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis" system by clicking the link below:

Overcoming a Fear of Flying with Hypnosis

When people say they are afraid of flying, really they are afraid of crashing.

The fact is that flying is one of the safest forms of travel if you compare the annual number of actual crashes with the number of flights. Of course, only the crashes are newsworthy further reinforcing any latent fear. Further, in the majority of emergency landings, most if not all of the crew and passengers walk away from the flight or at least do not suffer serious injury or die.

But like most irrational fears and phobias, the facts mean nothing to the person with the fear.

Sometimes the fear of flying was learned from a parent or accompanying adult. I know my uncle instilled his fear in his daughter and she did not fly anywhere until she had to start flying for business in her 30s. Irrational fears are often copied or modeled from someone else eg spiders, mice, dogs, the dark, needles etc. A fear of something life-threatening or potentially harmful is rational but to the extreme, the irrational fear can be severely debilitating. It is sensible to fearfully respect a Rottweiler or Pitbull Terrier but irrational to fear a toy poodle or a small yapping dog. The fear of being burned alive is understandable whilst a fear of lighting a candle is not.

If the fear has been learned, it can be unlearned, reprogramming the unconscious to react in a different way.

Of course a fear of flying may have started due to an actual flying incident whether an actual crash or just a difficult flight due to severe weather conditions. If severely traumatic, it may be advisable to re-visit the event under hypnotic regression and remove the emotional reaction and see it for what it was ie something which happened once but that does not mean it will re-occur. Sometimes hypnotic regression reveals a seemingly trivial event or emotion which has nothing to do with flying but may have happened just before a flight causing the mind to set up a trigger leading to anxiety. I read a case history of a man with a fear of flying whose hypnotic regression revealed an emotional parting with his fiancée just before a flight. Once he revisited that experience, he released the anxiety about flying.

If someone seeks CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) for any fear or phobia, they will typically be exposed to the fear in stages leading to dealing with it face on and perhaps provoking a severe reaction. This is the process of desensitization. I personally do not see why it is necessary to expose someone to an extreme version of the fear to allow them to overcome a daily fear.

Treating fears and phobias with hypnosis is very different. Hypnosis is a deep state of physical and mental relaxation in which the conscious mind allows access to the unconscious mind where there is no resistance. New positive suggestions are given to the unconscious mind to allow a fast change in how the person views whatever was causing the fear. A fear or phobia can be overcome very fast, in 2-3 sessions or sometimes in one session if the NLP Fast Phobia Cure is used which scrambles the fear in the unconscious mind removing it in about 15 minutes. Impressive? Definitely.

Personalized hypnotherapy is always the best course of action to deal with the precise cause of the fear and lead the person to a successful result. However, if this is not possible, a download hypnosis mp3 to overcome fear of flying is available along with a professional hypnotherapy script for hypnotherapists treating the fear of flying.

Treating Psoriasis with Hypnosis

What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition in which skin cells on certain parts of the body are produced much more rapidly than normal, up to ten times faster, causing a build up on the surface of ugly scaly patches, most commonly on the elbows or knees. These can be unsightly and painful. There may be itching, cracking and bleeding even keeping the sufferer awake with discomfort. It is known to be triggered by a number of factors, including trauma, infections, injury, drug reactions, smoking, alcohol and most notably emotional stress. Sufferers normally want to cover up their unsightly rashes during the summer months.

Psoriasis is non-contagious. Its most common form, plaque psoriasis, appears as raised, red patches or lesions covered with a silvery white build-up of dead skin cells, called scale. In 10- 30% of sufferers the psoriasis can also present as psoriatic arthritis, which causes pain, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints. Severe bowel problems can also develop.

There are several different types of psoriasis, but discoid or “plaque” psoriasis is far and away the most common form. It is distinguished by patches of inflamed, scaly skin on the trunk and limbs, appearing particularly on the elbows, knees and scalp. Additionally, a sufferer’s nails may become pitted, thickened or separated from the nail beds. Gutate psoriasis is the form most frequently found in children: small patches appear rapidly over a wide area, often after the child has had a sore throat.

When psoriasis occurs the cycle of cell growth is accelerated. In healthy skin the cycle of cell creation to the cell being shed is about 1 month; in skin affected with psoriasis the cycle is reduced to 3-4 days. The skin becomes thickened and red due to an increased blood supply required to support the increased activity and the dead skin cells appear as a white flaky build up. It is believed that it is the immune system that is causing the effect by sending faulty signals.

A genetic link has been suggested. Around 2% of Europeans and Americans contract the disease and it is less common in black and Asian communities. Symptoms usually appear for the first time in those in the 10-30 year old age bracket.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. We have no conscious control over what happens in our skin. Embarrassment or exercise may make our skin become redder and fear or illness may make it go pale. Our unconscious mind controls our skin, as such, hypnosis is also effective for treating wide variety of skin complaints eg acne, eczema, warts, hives, rosacea, pruritis and embarrassing problems such as blushing and sweaty palms.

The Orthodox Treatment of Psoriasis
Orthodox treatment advises exposure to the sun or to an ultra-violet lamp (light therapy) but only in small doses. An emollient (moisturizing cream) can also help. If an attack worsens, it is usually treated with an ointment containing coal tar or dithranol. Other options include P.U.V.A. (a type of phototherapy), corticosteroids and other drugs such as methotrexate. Psoriasis sufferers who experience accompanying arthritis may be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (N.S.A.I.D.’s), anti-rheumatic drugs or methotrexate and tranquillizer or antidepressant medication in severe cases.

Other forms of treatment include nutrition, detoxification, trichology, homeopathy, Ayurveda, acupuncture, healing and stress management.

The power of hypnosis with Psoriasis
This may be explained by the science of Psychoneuroimmunology which explores the correlation between how good one feels mentally and the strength of the immune system.

The unconscious learnt how to respond to a trigger to cause excessive cell growth. By reprogramming the unconscious to deal with similar triggers in a different way, the symptoms of psoriasis should subside.

Many health conditions where emotional factors play a significant role may be relieved by hypnosis. Why is this? Our emotional states may appear to arise autonomously, in a way that is outside our control. However, while it is true that emotional response is not a conscious behaviour, it has been clearly demonstrated that the nature, intensity and duration of such responses can be modified with hypnosis. The skin has been called the "mirror of the mind" and may well be the external manifestation of an internal conflict. Possible emotions may be anger, aggression, frustration or guilt.

Just as blood pressure can be raised or lowered, healing can be speeded up, immune response can be strengthened and pain can be reduced or eliminated. Hypnosis is an extremely effective way to bring about such changes by reprogramming the so-called instinctive responses controlled by the unconscious mind.

In some cases, uncovering early memories and removing the association with the memory have lead to a significant improvement in the condition.

The National Psoriasis Foundation, the American charitable body, states that hypnotherapy can be useful in the treatment of psoriasis. They highlighted that hypnosis is a relaxation technique and stress is a well known as a trigger for psoriasis.

It is also believed that psoriasis may be caused by trapped emotion or an inappropriate release mechanism for emotion. The discovery of the emotional cause and development of an alternative method to release that emotion can control the psoriasis. The sufferer may not be aware of the cause. Even those who have suffered from birth can benefit from hypnosis.

A download hypnosis mp3 Psoriasis treatment allows you to attain a much greater level of control over your condition through the use of powerful metaphor and hypnotic visualization. You will soon find yourself not only feeling much calmer, but noticing increasing improvements in your skin and general health. A transformative metaphor is utilized to help the person activate their own unconscious healing processes and relieve the psoriasis.

A professional hypnotherapy script for treating psoriasis is also available for download.

Scientific Study on the Effect of Hypnosis on Psoriasis
One study, conducted by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., former professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts, which was published in the September/October 1999 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine, examined the use of meditation-based relaxation tapes in psoriasis patients undergoing ultraviolet light (UV) treatments. Patients who listened to the tapes during the treatments cleared their skin more quickly (in some cases, twice as fast) than patients who had the light treatment alone.

Hypnotherapy can be of great help to psoriasis patients, according to a new report. Researchers at the Department of Dermatology, The John Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, USA carried out a three month study into the use of hypnotherapy in adults suffering with stable, chronic, plaque-type psoriasis.

Five patients were given specific positive suggestions about their skin. Six were given neutral suggestions. All the patients showed some benefit, but those who were given hypnotic suggestions specifically directed at their psoriasis enjoyed much better healing. The researchers found that the highly hypnotisable patients received far greater benefit than those who were only moderately hypnotisable.

Although only a small scale study, it suggests that hypnotherapy may be a useful therapeutic treatment for th(1) Tausk F, Whitmore SE: 'A Pilot Study of Hypnosis in the Treatment of Patients with Psoriasis.' Psychotherapy & Psychosomatics 1999;68:221-225 (DOI: 10.1159/000012336)

Queen Fabiola of Belgium Used Hypnosis During Surgery

Belgium's Queen Fabiola was sedated using hypnosis during her recent surgery.

The 80-year-old royal had surgery - believed to be on her thyroid - at the University Hospital of Liege on Thursday (08.01.09) but elected not to have a general anesthetic.

Fabiola - the widow of King Baudouin, who died in 1993 after 42 years as sovereign - underwent a technique called hypnosedation, which the hospital is famed for.

The method is usually used on older patients because general anaesthetics can have serious side-effects and can be dangerous for older people.

The medical centre in Liege has carried out more than 4,000 operations using the technique, and the queen is believed to have elected to have her operation there for that reason.

Fabiola's surgery went well and she was allowed home on Sunday (12.01.09).

Details of the royal's surgery are yet to be released, although a French television network has reported the operation was to fix a thyroid problem. A royal spokesman said: "Queen Fabiola underwent a planned benign operation."

Hypnosis for Children

By Louise Watts

One day, a little boy living in Germany in the eighteenth century had to undergo a serious operation to remove a tumour that was growing on his head. In the absence of any anaesthesia, the procedure would be a risky one. Before and during the operation, the little boy’s mother held his hand tightly and told him a story so vivid and so fantastic that the little boy was completely engrossed. The surgery was a success and throughout the operation the little boy had felt no great discomfort whatsoever, as his mind had been so completely focused on his mother’s amazing story. That little boy was Jacob Grimm, and the story was Snow White.

Using hypnosis with children is not a new phenomenon – there are references in both the Old and New Testaments describing children responding to treatments using suggestion and faith. It is simply that knowledge regarding this powerful therapy is fairly limited amongst the general public and many medical professionals alike.

Unfortunately, there are still many misconceptions that children hold about hypnosis – some of these come from the parents, but in the majority of cases, television is responsible. An example can be found in the Disney film, Aladdin, which depicts an evil sorcerer using hypnosis to “magically” make his victims obey his commands. However, more often than not, children are drawn to the “mysticism” of hypnosis, and any fears and misconceptions can be corrected before the start of each session.

It is fairly well known amongst hypnotherapists that children are excellent hypnotic subjects. As adults, we lose much of our ability to fantasise and daydream – something children are experts at. Up until around 10 years old, children have little distinction between fantasy and reality, and can usually create imaginative stories and tales with ease. Their imaginative capabilities are, therefore, incredibly useful when it comes to using hypnosis to help a wide range of problems.

Our minds are made up of the conscious mind (logical, rational) and subconscious mind (emotion, behaviour), which are separated by a kind of gatekeeper called the Conscious Critical Faculty (CCF). The CCF filters out anything unwanted that it perceives might harm us (although sometimes it also gets it wrong and filters out the good things!). However, children don’t develop the CCF until between 10 and 12 years. As a result, up to this age they accept everything at face value and their belief systems are very susceptible to suggestion.

Think of the situation whereby a child has fallen over and hurt their knee - the mother calms them by giving them a “healing kiss” and, as if by magic, the child’s knee automatically begins to feel better. This is an example of waking hypnosis being used by a mother, whether she consciously realises it or not.

In children over 12 years old, behavioural change can still take place, as the beauty of hypnotherapy as a treatment method is that it bypasses the CCF and communicates directly with the subconscious, that is, the part of the mind responsible for the behaviour or symptom in the first place.

As a rule, hypnosis will generally not be effective with children under the age of five. This is due to the inability to build the necessary rapport, as well as the fact that children of this age prefer not to close their eyes or sit still for long periods of time.

When we consider that many emotional problems we suffer from as adults have their root in childhood experiences and environment, it makes sense to ensure our children’s issues are dealt with as and when they arise. As a child’s mind is not fully developed, they believe that anything bad that happens is somehow their fault in one way or another: the father who leaves home, the mother who pays them no attention, the child who does badly in their school grades.

Some examples of the way hypnosis can help children and adolescents are:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Lack of self-esteem
Learning difficulties, including dyslexia
Destructive behaviour
Fears and phobias, particularly injections or visiting the dentist
Habits, including bedwetting and thumb sucking
Chronic pain
Weight control
Relationship problems, perhaps with a step-parent or sibling

The benefits of hypnotherapy don’t just end at when the child begins feeling better. Self-hypnosis techniques can be taught to both parents and children alike and children can be taught to express themselves, either verbally, or through creative methods, such as drawing or writing. Hypnosis works by empowering the child, rather than taking any control away from them, by allowing them to develop the necessarily skills to deal with any difficulties they may face in the future.
